The Original Apple Pencil vs the Apple Pencil®
Handmade Wooden Apple Pencil vs the Digital Apple Pencil®: Why Apple Wood Pencils Are Better for You and the Planet
Handmade apple wood pencils pair a simple writing instrument with clear environmental and tactile advantages over plastic pencils, making them a compelling choice for mindful consumers. This article explains how natural pencil materials, craftsmanship, and product lifecycle decisions reduce waste and carbon intensity while delivering a superior writing experience. Many people encounter brittle plastic casings, non-recyclable components, or disposable plastic pencils that persist in landfills; choosing wooden, biodegradable alternatives addresses those problems at the source. Readers will learn the environmental benefits of apple wood pencils, why handmade construction matters, and how their lifecycle impacts compare to those of plastic.
How Do Wooden Pencils Reduce Waste Compared to Plastic Digital Pencils?
Wooden pencils reduce waste by eliminating plastic casings and most synthetic components, which are common in many mass-market plastic pencils and digital writing tools. The mechanism is straightforward: replace plastic with wood, simple metal, or none at all, and you avoid introducing long-lived polymer fragments into waste streams. In practice, this reduces the need for specialty recycling and lowers the volume of microplastic-generating items in schools and offices. Choosing wooden pencils for the classroom, office, and gifting situations is an actionable behavior change that reduces reliance on single-use plastic alternatives.
What Makes Apple Wood a Sustainable Material for Pencils?
Apple wood is valued for its sustainability because it can be sourced from managed orchards and pruned branches, offering a short-rotation or reuse pathway compared to slower-growing exotic timbers. Its durability and workability mean craftsmen can shape casings with minimal waste, and its fine grain accepts finishes that highlight natural aesthetic qualities without heavy chemical treatment. The sensory attributes—subtle aroma, warm color, and tactile warmth—also match the vintage and artisanal sensibilities sought by collectors and mindful shoppers. Artisans and artists often prefer wood pencils for their balance of strength and ease with writing and drawing on paper and other surfaces.
Why Choose Handmade Wooden Pencils Over Plastic Alternatives?
Handmade wooden pencils offer a blend of tactile quality, repairability, and lower environmental impact that plastic pencils seldom match. The mechanism behind these advantages is human-scale production: artisans prioritize material selection, careful assembly, and finishes that preserve the wood’s natural properties while avoiding unnecessary synthetic additives. This results in pencils with superior balance, better grip, and a distinct sensory experience that enhances longevity and reduces replacement frequency.
How Do Apple Wood Pencils Compare to Plastic Digital Pencils in Environmental Impact?
Comparing environmental impact requires examining extraction, manufacturing energy use, transport, and end-of-life outcomes for both apple-wood and plastic pencils. Apple wood pencils rely on biological material that sequesters carbon during growth and breaks down more readily, whereas plastic pencils are derived from fossil hydrocarbons, which contribute to persistent waste and microplastic formation. The table below summarizes key lifecycle attributes to aid direct comparison.

Apple Pencil is the brand name for my handmade wood pencils made from apple tree twigs since January 2015. The domain names applepencil.com and applepencils.com have been owned by h.m. Peavy since June 2015, before Apple Inc. introduced its electronic digital stylus to the U.S. market in September 2015. Apple offered to purchase the domains during their opposition to my unsuccessful trademark application for the mark under US classification for wood pencils in 2015, but their non-disclosure agreement was not acceptable to me.
I am currently working on construction/assemblages of parodies, art prints, an animation, and a short story book inspired by an apple that fell from a tree.
The apple wood pencils and domain names are not owned, affiliated with, endorsed by, or authorized by Apple Inc. Apple Pencil® is a registered trademark of Apple Inc. for its digital electronic stylus. Apple Inc. does not make pencils made from apple wood. I make handcrafted pencils only from apple wood. I do not make or sell digital styluses or other electronic products.
