Unique, Impressive, made out of one piece of weighty wood, very good condition for their age, complete, never repaired in any way. Masterfully and traditionally hand-carved from one single piece of wood. Circa 1920s. The most authentic antique large hand-carved crocodile bench. Three solid, thick, massive legs that you will ever see. Hand-carved in western Africa and attributed to the Senufo tribe, the bench is naturally curved and stands on three thick carved legs. The seat is made of a single piece of indigenous hardwood. These kinds of benches were initially used as seating for important figures or as a symbol of status and authority; they are considered a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the Senufo people and are admired for their beauty, simplicity, and functionality, as well as their sculptural and artistic value.
Any "imperfections" are characteristic of the material/finish and the handmade nature. This is a genuine museum-grade piece. Surprisingly, it retains its original double view of beautiful textiles on its cushion. These unripped textiles themselves are an antique, separate piece of ancient African art, precisely because of the way they are woven, how the strips and the designs are made. These designs have special meaning and geometries that are reserved only for the ruler’s family. The cushion is showing normal discoloration, not due to exposure to sunlight, but due to its original use, adding that touch of authenticity to the bench.
