Antique Guatemalan Dance Mask, circa 1940s — Baile de los Prumes

This striking antique dance mask originates from Guatemala, circa 1940s, and bears a handwritten label on its interior reading "Baile de los Prumes" — identifying it as a ceremonial piece used in traditional Guatemalan folk dance performances. Carved from dense hardwood and finished in bold black and red polychrome paint, the mask presents a powerful, stylized face with rectangular eye openings, a prominent black mustache, and a downturned mouth conveying authority and gravitas.

The surface carries a deep, authentic patina accumulated over decades of ceremonial use — the hallmark of a truly danced mask rather than a decorative reproduction. A leather hanging cord is attached to the rear, and the interior shows the characteristic hand-carved hollow of a working mask. This is a rare survivor from mid-century Guatemalan folk art tradition, equally at home in a serious ethnographic collection or as a commanding focal point in an interior.
