Rare Antique Mexican Dance Mask, 1930s — Handcarved Polychrome Wood

A wonderfully primitive and characterful piece of Mexican folk art, this handcarved wooden dance mask dates to the 1930s and represents a rare survival from the golden era of Mexican ceremonial masking. Its distinctive blocky, near-rectangular form — approximately 5" tall × 6.5" wide — sets it apart from the more naturalistic masks of later decades, reflecting the bold, abstracted aesthetic of early 20th-century Mexican folk carving.

The face is painted in natural wood tones with a black-painted top and chin, carved black eyelashes arching over almond-shaped eye openings, a finely detailed curled mustache, and vivid red lips — a portrait of a mestizo gentleman rendered with wit and economy of means. A wire hanging cord is attached to the rear for display.

At nearly a century old, this mask is a genuine artifact of Mexican cultural heritage — a piece for the serious collector of pre-war folk art, ethnographic objects, or Latin American material culture.
