This exceptional example is attributed to Pedro Amador Reyes Juárez, a member of the renowned Reyes family of Tlatempan, Tlaxcala, whose masks are prized by collectors for their extraordinary realism and distinctive blue-painted interiors. 

The face is a tour de force of naturalistic carving and painting: a bearded gentleman with grey-streaked hair, glass eyes fitted with hand-painted lashes, rosy cheeks, a beauty mark, and a warm smile revealing painted teeth — all rendered in oil-based paint over carved wood with a lacquered finish that gives the skin an almost lifelike luminosity. The beard and mustache are rendered in fine detail, the eyebrows arched with aristocratic precision.

True to the Reyes family tradition, the mask incorporates an ingenious spring mechanism attached to a string that allows the masquerader to blink during performance — a theatrical flourish that delights audiences and speaks to the deep craft intelligence behind these objects.
