Juan Horta Surrealist Evil Mask — Signed Original, Pátzcuaro, Michoacán
Juan Horta is among the most celebrated woodcarvers working in Mexico today, based in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán — a region with a centuries-old tradition of ceremonial mask-making. Working from a single piece of wood, Horta creates fantastical, surrealistic compositions that blur the boundary between folk art and fine art, earning him collectors and admirers worldwide.
This signed original is a prime example of his colored work — a richly painted surrealist evil mask bursting with the symbolic vocabulary Horta has made his own: demonic faces, skeletal figures, serpents, and otherworldly creatures rendered in vivid polychrome against natural wood. The composition is dense and layered, demanding close inspection to fully absorb its narrative complexity.
The mask is in very good condition. There are scattered exit holes indicating past insect activity; however, there are no live insects present. A natural wood knot on the lower portion was filled by the artist himself during carving — visible in the photos and a testament to Horta's hands-on craftsmanship rather than a flaw. This piece is signed by the artist and comes from a private collection.
